Principal Engineer - Evangelist

Enterprise Technology (ET) is a Global Function encompassing platforms vital to the bank’s operation. ET’s mission is to “Enable, Protect and Delight” HSBC’s global businesses. The role emphasizes driving Engineering Excellence, delivering quality software efficiently, and reducing toil within a controlled framework.

• Hands-on, AI-first engineer who ships to production; strong development practices and SDLC/architecture/engineering standards.
• Deep expertise in Java or Python; ideally also JavaScript or Go.
• Event-driven processing experience or strong willingness to learn.
• Accountable, collaborative, and team-first; communicates clearly (code + stakeholders) and can articulate big-picture technical vision.
• Proactive problem-solver focused on business impact; respected for delivery and takes a holistic approach.
• Coaches/mentors others; actively adopts new tech/processes, thinks ahead, and guides teams—generalist mindset preferred.
• Ideally contributes externally (blogs/podcasts/communities, GitHub, open source).

Ideally:

• Domain knowledge of front-to-back traded markets and/or payments processing.
• Experience in high volume, multi-product data processing including batch, streaming, continuous processing, DataBricks / Lakehouse.
• GCP certified professional with practical experience designing, building, and running large-scale data processing applications as part of a DevSecOps team.
• Exposure to or experience with Data Science and MLOps.
• Practical experience designing, building, and running containerised workloads and applications, on-prem and on-cloud.
• Exposure to or understanding of no/low-code workflow tooling like Appian; experience migrating workloads off these tools and writing apps to replace them using open source alternatives like Activiti, Flowable.
• Mastery of technical discipline.
• Experienced and comfortable operating in a highly regulated environment with security and control frameworks.

• Ship production code as a hands-on engineer applying an AI-first approach and designing for automation from day one to reduce toil and accelerate secure delivery.
• Translate business opportunities into technical solutions where business value is central.
• Choose the right tool for the job, explain trade-offs, and help others do the same.
• Track and apply modern full-stack/platform shifts (containers, Kubernetes, cloud, virtualization, service mesh, data lakes, storage, cloud networking) and take a visionary view of what’s next.
• Build relationships with stakeholders/partners and strengthen engineering communities that raise quality and efficiency; confidently challenge current perspectives to steer towards better paths.
• Coach and mentor across teams; in Poland, champion Engineering Excellence and represent HSBC engineers externally.
• Role-model continuous learning and guide the engineering community on evolving trends.
